Dr. Jamshid Amini, political prisoner of Islamic Republic of Iran, since Feb. 2000

'' HE WAS IMPRISONED IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT FOR 507 DAYS ''
" HE HAS BEEN SEVERELY TORTURED"

Jamshid Amini; was born on 1957 in Mashhad. He got accepted in the medical school at Ferdosi University on 1976. While studying at the university, he was very vocal about his political views, and spoke with fellow students about his viewpoints toward human rights, women's rights, freedom of expression, democracy, secularism, and government censorship of the press. Jamshid tried to create an organization based on his beliefs. Due to his activism and political ideas, he came to the attention of the Intelligence People at the University "etelaat or office of Jahad". They dismissed him from medical school in 1980.

It took him one whole year, and he was allowed back to school on "probationary" status. As a condition of his re-admittance, he was required to report weekly to the "Jahad" the office of internal intelligence at the university, and file a report stating that he did not participate in any gatherings, that he has not supported opposition groups, and that he has not engaged in any anti-government activities. He finally graduated from medical school in 1984-1985. Jamshid was immediately assigned to the front line of the war with Iraq. He served as a doctor a total of 4 years(longer than the other doctors ) in dangerous areas in various places, including Fav, Majnon Island, Zeed, and Khoramshar. On the front line Jamshid was exposed to chemical weapons, and developed a lung disease as a result of this exposure. He also injured his legs when a bomb exploded nearby. He received treatment at Chamran Hospital in Ahvaz.

Jamshid was ordered to Kerman, one of the least desirable cities in Iran. He repeatedly asked the military to assign him to another city, but all his requests were denied.

During this time, he was studying on his own and trying to get into a residency program. He took and passed the required written exam, three (3) times in 3years, but every year whenever he tried to register with a university, he was denied. They did not give him a specific reason for denials. After so many inquiries and, traveleing back and forth to Tehran, he finally discovered that the denaiel on all of his requests is due to his political activities when he was a university student.

Since Jamshid could not return to school for his residency, Dr. Amini and his wife who was a pharmacist graduated from Howard university in the U.S.Adecided to pursue their earlier study of treatment for drug addicts. They realized the number of addicted people has been increased dramatically in Iran. They had done some researches before on herbal medicine for treatment of addicted patients so they decided to continue and after seven years of extended research they came up with a formula which could cure addiction in a short period of time with no adverse effect and the result was unbelievable and so effective.

In March 1993, he was assigned to the Hospital Section at Region 3 Military Headquarters in Tehran. At the hospital, he treated and had access to many important military people. He discretely talked to people sympathetic to his political ideas.

In Tehran, Jamshid created his own organization. This was an organization of people who belived in secularism, and it was not an organization with a military or armed compnent. He was following his political activities even stronger than before based on ( defending democracy and human rights in Iran, etc.) also he realized that the Islamic regime is involved, in distribution of the heroin and opium throughout the country, and the young generation are the real victoms. He pointed out their names and their purposes. Jamshid's organization held meeting at his clinic. Normally, these meeting would be at night, after 11:00 PM. finally, the regime decided to eliminate him, and ended his life.

The Islamic regime’s unhuman plan started on Feb 22, 2000. Sahefaja agents abducted Jamshid. The agents who arrested him were not wearing uniforms or badges. They surrrounded his car and pulled him out. He was handcuffed, blindfolded and taken to an unknown place.

A the same time Jamshid was arrested, ten men appeared at his house with no uniforms or badges, but they were armed. They forced their way into his apartment, and kept his wife inside ,and searched his house from 7AM until 8:30 PM. The same thing happened to his parent's house in mashhad ,and also his wife's parents in Esfahan. All three houses were raided on thesame day at the same time.

He eventually learned that he had been taken to a secret Sahefaja prison No. 336, also known as prison 36. SAHEFAJA ( A Farsi acronym for the "Intelligence and Security Agency of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran ").At prison 36, Jamshid was interrogated and brutally tortured. The agents wanted him to confess that he was conspiring with the CIA. They tortured him to elicit information and they made him sign documents confessing that he contacted opposition groups and was involved in a " conspiracy ".

He was held in a solitary confinement, in a cell that was about 2x2 meters for 507 days.

The types of tortures that they did to him are, as follows

A- Always started with beating and kicking his face and body by a group while he was blind-folded and sometime handcuffed
B- Whipping by electric cables while he was standing or fasten to a chair or to a bed to the point he would faint or loose conscious
C- Ghapany handcuffed (tightening two hands together one from up and one from down on his back) then hanging in the air.
D- They fasten his two legs and one hand to the bed (face down) and the other hand free for signing their dictated letters while they were pushing some cloth to his mouth and at the same time one of them with heavy weight would stand on his back.
E- They would hit his forehead to the ground over and over again until his forehead was all bloody and his blindfold cover was leaking of blood.
F- They beat with iron stick on his hands and his feet.
G- They wouldn’t let him go to sleep to the point of losing consciousness, and then they would pure freezing water on him.
H- They kept him hungry for days and then gave him some dish looks like stew and after he would finish eating it they announced, they had urinated in that food, which he would severely vomit.
I- Some days they would keep him thirsty and when he was asking for water they would give him a mug of water full of baby frogs.
J- They constantly told him, they have permission to torture him to the dead, so it is better for him to confess.
K- He was sentenced to execution. He was reportedly subject to mock execution.

They would take him for interrogation along with tortures ( blind-folded all the time ), and that might have taken from 1to 5-7-9-12-18 days, and at the end of that period, two of them would drag him back to the cell while he was all bloody and wounded and beaten to the death.

This abuse and torture resulted:

1- Loss of 100% of his hearing in his left ear.
2- Broken teeth (totally the front teeth and some at the back)
3- Broken bones of his palm and sole of his feet
4- Weakness and numbness in his calf’s muscles due to the beating by cables
5- Temporary loss of memory by being 507 days in solitary confinement along with the tortures
6- Deep phase of depression during these years
7- Interior eye bleeding which caused weakness in his eyesight
8- Loss of the hair in his legs because of the severe inflammation
9- The most important one is enlargement of his liver angioma which had grown to 7-cm and, he needed close medical monitoring and surgery

After bearing 507 days in solitary cell in prison 36 of sahefaja, he was sent to evin prison in a section, which was specified for political prisoner.

Finally Jamshid was charged in the court. The charges included spying for the United States and working for the CIA, cooperating with illegal opposition groups. At the end of the case, Jamshid was sentenced to 13 years in jail, 110 lashes, $150000.00 fine.

The same week, jamshid received 80 lashes (normally, a prisoner receives the lashes at the end of his sentence, not the beginning).

During these years his wife tried so hard for his freedom. She hired 5 different lawyers during these years, but none of them put any effort in his case and later on she found out that; they were contacted and threatened by the SAHEFAJA ; so she wrote so many letters herself to different ayatolahs in power and refered to so many places, but nobody paid any attension. For the past two years his health was getting worse and his wife was constantly requesting and insisting to the court, in order to get the permission to hospitalized him due to his liver and lung problem. She had to use her brother-in-law's apartment (Jamshid's brother ) as a bond, and also herself was the "guarantor ". They accepted, but after one week and in the middle of the treatment they sent a group to the hospital and took him back to the prison. It took 6 months for his wife to get another permission and they did the same shameful behavior. So last year when they had to let him hospitalized due to his liver enlargement, upon his wife request, he knew, soon, they are going to come after him, and he couldn't take anymore of those 7 years of injustice and he went to an unknown place.
